“I dropped 3 of those this morning,” he shrugged.

Glenn Maxwell has again made international headlines, following his stunning catch-assist in Saturday’s Matador Cup match against Western Australia. The Victorian all-rounder was fielding at long on, when D’Arcy Short skied a quicker delivery from Jon Holland. “I was lucky because I didn’t have to move,” said a candid Maxwell afterwards.

The ball soared skyward for what seemed like an eternity, before beginning its descent. Waiting for his moment, perched on the boundary’s edge, was Australia’s favourite bearded cricketer (not Hashim Amla). With the ball finally in reach, Maxwell leapt backwards at the full horizontal, like a confused salmon, catching and releasing it before hitting the ground. Teammate Rob Quiney finished the job.

“That’s Maxi isn’t it,” laughed captain and teammate Cameron White. “We call him the Big Show for a reason”. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much of a show at the WACA yesterday. Only fifty people turned up for a rain-reduced, 28 over-a-side affair. Chasing 190 to win, Victoria limped to 9/98 in 18 overs before another downpour ended proceedings. “What a shit game,” said local fan David Harvey. “I can’t believe I gave up my Saturday for that.” Indeed, every aspect of the game was shit. So shit in fact, that it justified Maxwell’s subdued celebrations.

“If I’d done that, I would’ve run 3 laps of the WACA by now,” said a bemused White. “Then again, the dismissal reads Short, c Quiney, b Holland, Matador Cup, WACA. Nothing to get too excited about. It’s not like Lara, c Maxwell, b. Warne, World Cup Final, MCG. Everyone knows the WACA is the toilet of Australian cricket.”

Perhaps adding to Maxwell’s disappointment, was the commentary team covering the moment. “I just checked it out on Facebook,” said Harvey. “It’s already got 2,000 likes, that’s how good it was. It didn’t matter that Moody and Chappell were on commentary. Glenn drowned out those charisma vacuums”. Twitter was abuzz last night, with #MatadorCup trending. That in itself is fucking incredible.
